The Pharmacy at 8
Argyle Street Bath is scheduled as a building of historical and architectural
distinction and preserved against destruction and desecration. Its cultured
elegance and the careful proportions of its divided windows and the restrained
decoration of the iron work beneath be speakon origin contemporary with
the 18th Century architecture for which the Roman city is justly renowned.
Left,
the attractive Ionic columned shop front now rests the restored arms of
Charlotte Sophia, Queen of England 1744-1818 and the wife of King George
3rd. The arms are modeled in Coade stone, an artificial stone which was
widely used from 1769-1830.
On
November 24th 1817, Queen Charlotte made a trip to Bath whilst she patronized
the shop, and since that day her coat of arms have graced the shop. To
this day the shop remains in its original and untouched beauty. The authentic
fixtures and fittings as well as the splendid collection of old apothecary
jars and bottle have been preserved in what can only be described as a
fully functioning museum of British pharmaceutical history
